Seraphin Gallery proudly announces the opening of uncounted spaces, a solo exhibition featuring Nancy Sophy. The exhibition will run from January 23 through February 22, 2015, with an opening reception on Friday, January 23, from 6 – 8 PM.

Uncounted spaces will display Nancy Sophy's multifaceted paintings and works on paper, which are concerned with process, memory and the passing of time.  In her works on paper, she is drawn to the medium of unpigmented oils because of their unique unpredictability. Sophy's choice of oils include poppy seed oil, linseed oil and grape seed oil. Working in this medium allows her to create  transparent layers in the paper in which she explores  depth and controlled mark making. Even though the oil appears faint, it seeps into the drawing and spreads throughout and makes a powerful presence in her work.

Topics of identity, heritage and fragmented narrative are explored in the paintings and drawings of Sophy. When discussing her own work, she states, "My own vocabulary of symbols describes intangible subjects as clear, succinct visual expressions...Memories of and a sense of dislocation from my family heritage also inform my imagery. 

Nancy Sophy received her MFA in painting from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. She has exhibited at the the Delaware Center for Contemporary Arts, Fleisher Art Memorial and the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and has received grants from the Leeway Foundation, Change, Inc., Artist's Fellowship Inc., and the Adolph and Esther Gottlieb Foundation. Her work is in numerous private collections as well as the permanent collection of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, where her work featured in the 2013 exhibition "First Look: Collecting for Philadelphia."
